The Artist

I'm Ọláyinká, a self-taught Nigerian artist based in Canada.

I once had a corporate career — steady, sensible, exactly the kind of straight line the world tells you to walk. I left it. Not because it failed me, but because staying meant becoming the "perfect, structured" version of myself I'd spent years quietly fighting.

That fight is the whole practice now. Every piece starts with a loose wrist and no plan for where the line goes next — I don't let myself see my own next move, on purpose. Perfection, to me, is just the mind's way of keeping you stuck. Finishing a piece, on my own terms, is how I win that argument, over and over.

The result is Dala: structured and unstructured, both, always. Art that carries a line — and a message — that refuses to walk straight, because the sidestep has always been sitting there, unused, and most people never take it.

I'm not asking you to admire that from a distance rather I'm making it something you can carry.
